Need for controversy
Well, I'm thinking that, as humans, we always just want a bit of controversy. Today in my Public Relations class, the professor talked about PR officers responsibility to make new releases "newsworthy." That's what this election debacle is all about, really. When you get down to the nitty gritty, all that the people wanted to do was throw in a bit of controversy.
Controversy is the reason why the students wrote initially; they needed to show their disdain for someone or something--BYUSA just happened to take the hit for that. This is why the editorial board wrote what they did; budding opinion leaders wanting to make a mark on-campus and maybe get a few more papers off the stands.
At the risk of sounding too pessimistic, I want to unequivocally declare that I understand. I know why students are concerned. I know why the editorial board wants to "Level with us." Problem is, I can't do anything for people who don't want to participate. I received a really nice message from a friend who said,
"Non-participants (in which category I include myself) will almost certainly never grasp the full value of BYUSA, as is the case with almost any activity in life. It is hard to explain to someone how exercise makes you feel better until they actually try it. So, continue to pay the hecklers no mind."
I appreciated his comments. And I endorse this message. I will now pay them no mind. The end (or at least until next time I want to rant).
